On Oct. 2, 1881, a small group of men met in the basement of St. Mary's Church on Hillhouse Avenue in New Haven, Connecticut. They were called together by their 29-year-old parish priest, Father Michael J. McGivney. These men formed a fraternal society that has become the world's largest Catholic family fraternal service organization. One of the ideals of Fr. McGivney was to provide financial assistance to the widows and orphans of its members. This original idea grew into an organization of Catholic men dedicated to promoting the concepts of charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism. Today faith, family, and fraternity are the foundation upon which the Knights of Columbus stands. The Order has been called the "strong right arm of the Church," and has been praised by popes, presidents and world leaders. Our most noteworthy project has been our support of Holy Cross Children's Services since its inception as Boysville of Michigan in 1948.

The Holy Cross Institute is charged with creating a community among secondary schools, colleges and universities founded and sponsored by the Congregation of Holy Cross. It provides resources, programs and events that educate administrators, faculty, board members and students on the unique Holy Cross educational legacy.

The Samaritan Center is managed by Boysville of Michigan, doing business as Holy Cross Children's Services, and SER Metro-Detroit as a collaborative community resource center for neighborhoods adjacent to the 5555 Connor Ave. site. Holy Cross Children's Services serves as the managing partner of the facility. Following in the tradition of the Sisters of Mercy service to those in need, the center is a unique blend of carefully selected organizations who have a history of service to the disadvantaged and who are committed to the continuing redevelopment of Detroit’s East Side. Center services are designed to serve a broad spectrum of needs for all age ranges. Service areas include: education, job training and placement, health care, children, youth and family development services, elder care; and community development activities.

Catholic Charities of Monroe County www.ccmonroe.org

The mission of Catholic Charities of Monroe County, inspired by the call to love one’s neighbors, respects, educates and empowers all individuals and families to live responsibly. Since 2005 CCMC has been managed by Holy Cross Children's Services. The continuum of services provided includes group, individual and family counseling for children, adults and seniors as well as specialty services for individuals with alcohol and drug use disorders.  Catholic Charities of Monroe County is also the administrative provider of Head Start services in Monroe County, serving more than 350 children each year.

The Department of Human Services (DHS) is Michigan's public assistance, child and family welfare agency. DHS directs the operations of public assistance and service programs through a network of over 100 county department of human service offices around the state.  Family services include referral for employment and training, independent living services providing housing assistance, family planning, counseling, health-related services, volunteer services, refugee assistance, foster family care, transitional services to youth exiting foster care/out-of-home placements, child day care, migrant services, Native American services, and domestic violence prevention and treatment programs. These services are provided to help maintain and strengthen family life and to help families become self-sufficient.

A wide range of service programs is available for the families and children of Michigan. They include protective and preventive services for children who are neglected, abused, or exploited, including foster care placement. The agency also provides a wide range of institutional and non-institutional social services for the care, training, and treatment of neglected and delinquent children committed to the agency as state wards and temporary court wards. Such services include casework and counseling, adoption, foster care, and the operation of centers for institutional residential care and group homes. In addition, it offers consultation on general child welfare problems to private and public agencies throughout the state and offers services through the Interstate Compact.

The Michigan Federation for Children and Families is Michigan’s largest membership association dedicated to child and family services with 40 full agency members, four affiliate member agencies and 90 individual members.  MFCF has been advocating for Michigan children and families since 1969.

The Michigan Adoption Resource Exchange is an information and referral service for prospective adoptive parents interested in adopting children with "special needs," and for adoption workers looking for homes for these children. The MARE website provides a photolisting of waiting Michigan children and of Michigan families interested in adopting children with special needs.
